We finally get a closer look at the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series, with a brand-new teaser!
Thanks to this trailer, it’s a little clearer now regarding what the series entails and how it plans to cover the world of Lara Croft. Add the series to your watchlist on Netflix!
Why is Zip There?
My main curiosity after its initial announcement was which game in the franchise the series is set in. But, from the cast list, we know that Zip and Jonah are part of the cast, which only added to my confusion.
For those who haven’t played the Tomb Raider games, or at least not the older ones, Zip was first introduced in Tomb Raider: Chronicles, and is also part of Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: Underworld.
Whereas Jonah is from the newer Tomb Raider entries and features heavily in the recent trailer. The reboots take place a few years before the original titles, with Lara being a little younger.
My only guess is that Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft covers the older games by having character cameos, but largely takes place in the same timeframe as Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Zip isn’t a part of the reboot at all, so there’s no logical reason why he’s in the series.
Is it Set During the Reboot Timeline?
As per Lara’s outfits, my theory seems to be correct, at least somewhat. While we don’t see a lot of the clothing that Lara wears in the Netflix series, a lot of it looks similar to what she wears in the recent Tomb Raider games.
Lore-wise, the Tomb Raider reboot titles loosely connect to the original games. They may seem like a sort of prequel, but in all honesty, they’re not, especially with the changes to Lara’s backstory.
All in all, I’m excited to see how the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series plays out. As a long-time fan of the franchise, I’m happy to see that it’s still in the spotlight. I just hope the studio does it justice!
