If you’re a fan of Cards, the Universe and Everything—or top tier tactical CCGs generally—then this is your lucky day.
If you’re also a fan of monsters, you might want to get yourself a lottery ticket.
Eerie Worlds, from developer Avid Games, is the follow-up to one of our favorite card battlers of recent years, but this time around the studio has swapped amusing trivia for international bone-chilling terror.
Why international? Because Eerie Worlds features a compendium of the scariest monsters in the world, from the Scottish Kelpie to Mami Wata of West African legend.
There are monsters you’re bound to recognise, like Bigfoot and the Banshee, and a whole menagerie of monsters you’ve probably never heard of. They include the Blue Men of the Minch, the Dalby Spook, and Nale Ba.
All in all there are 160 monster cards, with the same number again set to be added over the next couple of months. Each card has an exhaustively researched description on the back, too, so Eerie Worlds is all the monster education you’ll ever need.
Monsters in Eerie Worlds belong to one of four Alliances: Grimbald, Zerrofel, Rivin, and Synnig. They come in a variety of different Hordes, too, with Japanese monsters belonging to the Yukai Horde, Slavic monsters belonging to the Slavic Horde, and so on.
Gameplay-wise, your job is to take a deck of ten cards into battle, including nine monsters and a world card, and play them out in quickfire 30-second moves.
There are bonuses for pitting monsters of different Alliances and Hordes against each other, unique abilities to unleash, and Mana to manage as you attempt to keep your monsters alive and your opponents’ monsters dead.
You can merge duplicates to create more powerful monsters, too. In fact, with merging factored in there are 248 different possible cards right now, with many more to come.
