The year 2013 – 2014 showed us the rapid growth of mobile games with more publishers heading towards the iOS or Android platform. From the conventional connect-3 puzzle games such Bejeweled and as Puzzles and Dragons, we now have Candy Crush, Tower of Saviors and Disney’s Tsum Tsum. We have endless runners (Line’s Cookie Run), Tap-Battles (Brave Frontier) and City-builders (Clash of clan).
At the beginning of the mobile game era, there has been lots of Action RPG games, Back then, ARPG games has a proper story line with about 8-12 hours of game life and once you complete the game, there really isn’t any other things to do. As the genre depicts, people want more Action for their ARPG game and not just a short story line.
However, that doesn’t stop developers from producing ARPG but instead, motivate them to come up with different features to revive the genre. During the second half of last year, there was a sudden influx of ARPG games that surface into the market each trying hard to distinguish themselves from each other but fall short after awhile due to the lack of content or variety of things to do. That was when mobile game publishing titan, Gamevil, manages to launch 2 big ARPG and proved to the world that the genre is not dead and it doesn’t require a story line to keep it interesting.
Kirtika and Darkness Reborn, which I believed was the 2 more popular ARPG games that appeared in the market as it brought about many different types of gameplay such as PVP and Guild battles. The latter, added raid bosses to the game and also a 3v3 Arena which gives players the co-op function to play with other people in a real-time basis.
Darkness Reborn
Of all the ARPG that released last year, I picked Darkness Reborn to be the best one out there not only because of it’s gorgeous graphics but also the endless gameplay capabilities in 1 play-through. Currently, there are 3 different classes to choose from. Players can play as the valiant Warrior whose actually a Sparta inspired killing machine, the nimble Kunoichi who wield’s the quick Samurai blade and kill enemies from the shadows, or the deft Daemon Hunter, the latest addition to the world of rift, killing monsters from far with his xbow.
Game Modes
What makes Darkness Reborn so different from other ARPG is it’s many different game modes available. There are 3 different game modes to choose from:
Campaign – normal story quest with 3 levels of difficulty
Raid Boss – Players will unlock this at level 25 and fight difficult raid bosses for a chance to acquire legendary equipment.
PVP Mode – There are 4 different kinds of PVP mode, all of which are 3 v 3 battles.
VS AI (lvl 10), Custom Match (lvl 10), Individual Ranking (Lvl 15), Guild Ranking (lvl 20)
Each of these individual game modes will allow users to spend at least 30 minutes on a single play-through. With a fast stamina recharge timer, it is very much possible to play the game for hours before depleting all of your stamina.
Items
Much like the Diablo series, the stats on each item from Darkness Reborn is randomly generated thus allowing players to collect and customize their gears to suit different challenges.
Kongbakpao’s Favourite Class
My favourite class would be the Kunoichi for obvious reasons (the only female character). The Kunoichi wields a dual Samurai blade and is the most nimble character in the game. With a high attack speed, she slashes her enemies quickly and easily as if they are Tofu. Although she’s the most squishy character compared to the other 2 in PVP, a good Kunoichi can CC her enemies, knocking them down constantly and kill them with ease without giving the opponent a chance to retaliate. She’s also good on raid bosses with her damage high damage output.
The only down side I find about the game is it’s auto-battle feature. Unlike most other ARPG, the game seems to discourage users from using the auto-battle feature as your characters will not be fighting at it’s optimum ability. The attack seems to slow down a lot which often allows the enemies to surround you and dealing lots of damage on you. It’s a good and bad thing as it forces you to play the game. Recent mobile games have made gamers lazy with their auto-battle functions thus Darkness Reborn actually wants you to play the game! Besides, with PVP and Co-op Raid bosses, players shouldn’t be auto-battling in the first place. Well the down side is that players who are busy will lose out to those who can play more.
