Monster Hunter Wilds Weapon Tier List

Weapons support players as their primary tool for combat. So, making a split decision between different options isn’t so simple. Some weapons rely on stealth builds, whilst other tankier weapons deal massive damage but swing much slower. Each player has their own main and ideally the best weapon is one you have fun with.

But, you’re not here for that, you’re here for rankings. So, let’s get into it!

S-TIER

  • Sword and Shield – Pressure monsters with unpredictable attacks, quickly alternating between slashing attacks and K.O. hits with the shield. This weapon makes it easy to control the fight thanks to its ability to make monsters stagger and fall.
  • Charge Blade – A weapon that once charged, performs different abilities depending on the player’s preference. Fusing the blade and shield creates a savage chainsaw which carves monsters. One of the flashiest and most versatile weapons in MHW!
  • Switch Axe – Another changing weapon that’s heavier than the Charge Blade. The Switch Axe combines a massive axe with a sword to deal huge damage whilst charging its ultimate move, fusing to a monster and exploding, dealing insane damage.
  • Hammer – A blunt weapon designed to crush monsters and make them stagger to allow time for charging powerful consecutive combo hits. Using the grapple tool, players can swiftly move around monsters to evade attacks and get the drop on them.

A-TIER

  • Long Sword – Long-range, agile and fast. Great at counters and parrying with combo potential.
  • Dual-Blades – The best long-combo weapon with rapid attacks, allowing for player mobility and quick dodging.
  • Hunting Horn – A melody-based attacker similar to the hammer which essentially bonks monsters. The music played during combat will apply different enhancers to the player and their allies, buffing their skills and helping secure the win.
  • Insect Glaive – A very unique weapon that’s seamless and agile, combining flips and spins to combo monsters and deal damage from the ground or airborne. An excellent weapon choice if you plan on taking a Kinsect with you, which creates fluid unison attacks and an incredible finisher move.

B-TIER

  • Greatsword – Powerful tanky weapon but slow moving. Great for dealing immense impact damage. Requires careful timing and aim for slow charge-up moves.
  • Gunlance – Think a lance if it had a canon hidden beneath its shell. This weapon fires projectiles at monsters from long and close-range, allowing for combat adaptability.
  • Light Bow-gun – An ideal long-range gun which adapts to different attack stances from shotgun-like pellets to normal shots at medium-range, and pierce shots from long-range. As far as ranged weapons go, the light bow-gun has a solution to everything.
  • Heavy Bow-gun – A weighted gun which packs more of a punch than its lighter kin. This weapon deals more damage per hit, and benefits from a variety of ammo to perform different attack styles. It comes pre-loaded with an explosive counter!
  • Bow – An agile long-range weapon that pelts monsters with arrows. Charging the attack before unleashing increases the damage, and perfect evades restore stamina and perform discerning dodges, which allows the player to regain control of the fight.

C-TIER

  • Lance – Not objectively bad, but the premise of this weapon is to tank all incoming damage and reflect it unto the monster. Relies on perfectly timed guards to negate attacks, but rebounds with a lunge attack when perfect guards are performed.

D-TIER

  • There are no D-TIER Weapons right now!

What Each Tier Means

This tier aims to tell you the best of their respective category, and I can’t guarantee you’ll agree with my choices. But, if you still find yourself rattled over the placements, keep reading to learn how I’ve allocated each weapon into its respective tier.

  • S: Excellent choices to make! They’re fun and ‘safe’ options for newer players who aren’t familiar with Monster Hunter gameplay mechanics.
  • A: Sitting high on the list, these elite few may not be amongst the best, but they’re still great choices thanks to their versatile and adaptable combat capabilities.
  • B: These average few make good choices if you want to try something new but aren’t sure what to try. They’re great contenders if the player wielding them is well experienced!
  • C: If you fancy a challenge, try these weapons! No weapon is truly better than another and it’s down to how you wield it. These few pose a challenge if you’re not prepared to master their skills.
  • D: Not my personal favourite, I don’t see much use in anyone equipping these.
